It was brought to my attention yesterday that a high school football team in Ohio just broke that state's regular season winning streak on Friday night.
The Wyoming Cowboys from Cincinnati (yeah, I know it's confusing talking about a team from Wyoming in Ohio named the Cowboys) now hold the record for most consecutive regular season wins when they defeated Taylor 38-0 to extend their streak to 72 games. They broke the regular which was previously held by Moeller (Cincinnati) from 1978-1985.
That's quite impressive.
The Cowboys' last regular season loss was October 23, 2015. The streak started the following week with a 51-8 win over Deer Park.
Oddly enough, the regular season success hasn't always translated to the postseason. Wyoming has won just one state title (2018) during the streak. Last year they came up short to Glenville (Cleveland) in the state championship game.
Aaron Hancock has been the head coach since 2012 and has a record of 127-17. Hancock had been an assistant 11 years prior to taking over as the head coach. He won the Paul Brown Coaching Award in 2019.
Wyoming's top players are Senior Receiver D.J. Gray and Sophomore Running Back Jackson Hamilton. The duo has combined for almost 900 yards of offense for the Cowboys so far this season.
Closest game during the streak has been a 14-12 win over Taft (Cincinnati) in 2018.
Andale High School in Kansas has the longest active overall win streak in high school football at 54 games with four straight state titles. De La Salle High School in Concord, California holds the all-time record with 151 straight wins.Having achieved their place in state history, the Cowboys (5-0) will look to continue extending their historic run on the road next Friday against Cincinnati Hills League opponent Reading (4-1), who sits in the second spot of the conference behind Wyoming.
